Just for Fun – HenBlog – Wednesday, February 10, 2016

...a use for these decals.   What about these vintage Hallmark cards with real feathers? Totally charming!   My favorite item that I’m letting go of is this tea kettle.   Just look at that face.   I’ve never risked using it – I think that plastic would melt on my gas cooktop. I’ve nowhere to display it in my kitchen. What about putting it in yours? This is the listing for the tea kettle. All of the other items (including more vintage paper napkins and an embroidery decal) are here. If you do decide to bid and then win,...

Awkward Cat Photos – The Vintage Hen – Monday, December 1, 2014

I collect vintage photographs of animals and their people. (You can find my favorites printed up as postcard books in my store.) At one time I thought I’d add another title – Vintage Cat Photographs. Not unexpectedly, it’s difficult to find good old cat photographs. Shutter speeds were slow. Cats twitch. They leap. They scowl. What I have is a collection of awkward vintage cat photographs. Here’s one: Actually, I rather like them like that....

New Titles! – HenBlog – Monday, September 23, 2013

Unlike most postcard books, this one doesn’t have a perforated edge for card removal. Instead, It’s bound cleanly along the top. Vintage Farm Animal Photographs: A Book Of 30 Postcards – The HenCam Store

$10 Quantity: We're Sorry   I’ve selected 30 images from my collection of vintage photographs and made them into a book of postcards. On small farms, people lived with a multitude of animals. Goats, mules, horses, chickens, cats, cows, dogs and more. These vintage photographs capture the close relationship, and the affection and admiration of farmers for their animals. The postcards are large, 5 inches by 7 inches, and printed on high-quality heavy card stock. Unlike most postcard books, this one doesn’t have a perforated edge for card removal. Instead, It’s bound cleanly along the top. Leave the book whole,...

Vintage Cat Photo – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, March 25, 2014

...and cats for sale. Terry, did you know that the long time vet in your town, Peter Morey, was allergic to cats? He took medication for years and eventually got over it. His wife was delighted to finally be able to have a cat in the house. Jennifer Dudley Today must be my lucky day! I love your vintage photos and have saved a number of vintage chicken photos. Imagine my delight to see the vintage cat photo this morning. I have 5 cats; 3 indoor and 2 adopted outdoor. The outdoor cats interact relatively well with the chickens. I...

Ta-Dah! A Revamped HenCam – HenBlog – Sunday, May 27, 2012

...second blog, The Vintage Hen! I have a collection of vintage chicken-related objects and ephemera. Now I have a place to share it with you. I’ve also been working on other projects that have led me to do research on our relationship with farm animals. I’m especially interested in women’s work at the turn of the last century. I have photographs that will delight and make you think. There’s still a lot to do. I’ve already written and posted new FAQs, but I have a list of a dozen more topics that I want to post soon. I now have...

My Vintage Apron Collection – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Having worked in restaurant kitchens and bakeries, I believe in practical tools appropriate for each task. That even applies to what I wear. An apron is essential cooking gear. This is my apron of choice. But, there are times in the kitchen for a bit of whimsy and charm. When I’ve finished most of the cooking, but still have a few last-minute tasks, and I’ve changed into nice clothes, and guests are on the way, that’s when I pull out one of the vintage aprons from my collection. I have a baker’s dozen to share with you. All are homemade....

Collections of Vintage Chicken Stuff – HenBlog – Monday, January 11, 2016

When Scholastic picked up Tillie Lays An Egg , the idea was that it would be a series. Tillie Lays an Egg is a picture book, but the pictures are actually staged photographs of my hens in tableaus filled with vintage objects that happen to have chicken motifs. I happily set about finding and purchasing all sorts of things that had great poultry graphics, like this canister of louse powder:   And these tablets:   But, in the publishing world, there’s never a guarantee. My editor was let go. My new editor wasn’t interested. I was left with boxes of...

Patriotic Boy and Goat – The Vintage Hen – Thursday, July 4, 2013

I love this photograph. Look at how the boy has his hand, lovingly, on his goat’s shoulder. Look at how simple, yet patriotic, the flags are in the wagon. There’s a sweet gentleness about this scene. I want to step into the photo and walk down the street with them and watch a parade. In August, this image will be in a new book of postcards, Vintage Farm Animal Photographs. Meanwhile, Vintage Chicken Photographs is available in the HenCam store....

Vintage Apron #5 – The Vintage Hen – Monday, November 18, 2013

The best homemade vintage apron has fluffy hens,   useful pockets,   and a vain rooster right in the center....

Windmill Weight – The Vintage Hen – Friday, July 13, 2012

...at Brimfield. But it might have been a fake. There was something about this one’s patina that looked off, and the booth had other repros so I didn’t trust the dealer. I’m not sorry that I passed on it. Nor am I sorry that I didn’t bring home the chicken taxidermy. But I do wish that my kitchen had room for this. I should have brought this home to go in the basement next to my husband’s vintage arcade games, but I didn’t splurge on it. However, I didn’t come home empty handed. I bought a few vintage postcards. You’ll be...

Dog in a Hat – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, April 29, 2014

...a toy dog’s smushed in nose and spaniel ears. He’s clearly a pet. (Does this remind you a bit of Lily and Scooter?) But, look again. The little dog is wearing a sweater. And a hat. Look again. It’s not just a hat, it’s a metal helmet with feathers decorating it. Notice, too, that despite the dog’s tongue sticking out, that he carries himself with a regal bearing.   I’ve no idea what these two are up to. What do you think? More vintage dog images can be found in Vintage Dog Photographs: 30 Postcards. Available in the HenCam Store....

Not Over Yet – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, March 11, 2014

It’s a blue-skied, sunny and almost warm day today, but winter isn’t over yet. Snow, sleet and freezing rain is predicted for later in the week. Sigh.   This photo, and more vintage dog images, are found in Vintage Dog Photographs: 30 Postcards, available in the HenCam store....

Vintage Apron #8 – The Vintage Hen – Thursday, November 21, 2013

This color scheme is similar to Vintage Apron # 4: mid-century pink, turquoise, grey and black.     But even with those roosters (on small, starred balls, what’s with that?) the scalloped pink trim makes this number somehow flirty and feminine.   I have twenty pies to bake in the next two weeks for my Pie Party. I’ve already rolled out and frozen 16 pie crusts, but since some of the pies have top and bottom crusts, I still need to make 4 more, and a few graham cracker crusts, too. Time to tie on the apron and get to...

Max and Duplicatot – The Vintage Hen – Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Max and Duplicatot are dressed for the winter.   This photograph is from my collection of vintage animal ephemera, and is available in Vintage Chicken Photographs: 30 Postcards in the HenCam store and at select retailers....

Vintage Easter Basket – The Vintage Hen – Friday, March 15, 2013

How charming is this? Before there were cheap plastic baskets, there were inexpensive paper baskets. You can still find them at flea markets, and they’re still an affordable bit of fun. I found this for less than $10. Just look at the plumage and expression on this chicken! The back half looks like my Welsummer, but I’ve no idea what the front end is based on, which, I think, makes it all that more charming. Does your Easter bunny have a vintage basket to put eggs in?...

Exercise For Laying Hens – The Vintage Hen – Monday, September 24, 2012

My collection of vintage poultry books and pamphlets have charming graphics, and they’re worth seeking out just for that, but they also are filled with excellent advice. Three things were consistently recommended: sunshine, greens and exercise. Even as flocks became larger, and feed was bought instead of grown on the farm, this advise still held true. In 1929 the Wirthmore Feeds company put out a booklet. You’d think they’d have a vested interest in confined birds that ate only their product, and a lot of it. But, no! The cover showed busy chickens outside on grass. (As an aside, I...

Postcard Book Special Offer – The Vintage Hen – Friday, November 29, 2013

Here in the United States, the day following Thanksgiving has become known as Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. This turkey’s attitude pretty much sums up how I feel about going shopping at the mall with the crowds this long weekend.   Photograph from VINTAGE FARM ANIMAL PHOTOGRAPHS: 30 POSTCARDS Although I can’t bear the thought of stepping foot into a big box store anytime this long weekend, I do like a bargain. You probably do, too. And so, I am having my own After Thanksgiving Holiday Sale here at HenCam. Purchase two or more vintage animal...

Vintage Chicken Party Decor – HenBlog – Monday, July 14, 2014

The Chicken Garden Party on Saturday was an excuse for me to pull out some of the vintage items from my collection. What I have is charming and quirky, but not particularly valuable, so I have no qualms about using it even when there are children and dogs about. I’ll likely never find more of these 1970s napkins, but I was happy to see people wipe their fingers with them.   I purchased the napkins off eBay along with a matching plastic tray, which you can just see here under the Rosemary Molasses Cookies.   I have a set of...

Vintage Chicken Photographs: A Book Of 30 Postcards – The HenCam Store

$10 Quantity: We're Sorry   I’ve selected 30 images from my collection of vintage photographs and made them into a book of postcards. There are chickens in laps, on heads, in arms, and even on a bicycle! The postcards are large, 5 inches by 7 inches, and printed on high-quality heavy card stock. Unlike most postcard books, this one doesn’t have a perforated edge for card removal. Instead, It’s bound cleanly along the top. Leave the book whole, or tear off a card as you would a sheet of paper from a tablet. Wholesale inquiries welcome. $10 Quantity: We're Sorry...

Old Home Day – HenBlog – Wednesday, July 3, 2013

My small town (population around 5,000) celebrates Old Home Day on the Saturday before July 4th. It’s one of the best things about living here, and I make a point of staying put over the holiday. I’ve missed fewer than a half-dozen in the more than twenty years that I’ve lived in this town. There’s an ice cream social, a pet show, a frog jumping contest, a country fair with booths selling cotton candy, trail maps, and crafts (I was there with my Vintage Chicken Photographs postcard book and bags made from feedsacks.) There’s a ceremony honoring citizens, and the...

Valentine Greetings – HenBlog – Monday, February 13, 2012

Marie They are adorable! Thank you,and happy Valentines Day to you! Robin I love vintage cards! Now, most of them are the "cartoon" of the day and not very original. Vintage Bunny Valentine – The Vintage Hen – Monday, February 3, 2014

...keep the rabbit closed up inside then. You could have a separate hutch/run for the rabbits. Adjacent to coop. Pat D. I love the vintage things! It was hard to accept that I am vintage, also! I found some of my first Valentines, and couldn't believe how vintage they were, such a shocker! Lesley S Ha ha ha Pat.....Me too! Didn`t we have the best valentines as children? They were all different and fun and we could spend hours choosing just the right one for each school-mate. Our school had a post-office set up in the main hall at our...

Egg Record Chart – HenBlog – Monday, January 2, 2012

...all get names around here...some names chance to fit the personalities but they all have names...I think the kids around here love that the most when we hatch chicks. We let the neighborhood kids suggest names. Kitty McKnight Terry, please show us a picture of the tote bags you make. I am also a sewer and love to repurpose things. I have a large collection of vintage feed bags. Many have just been hemmed and become pillow cases and cushion covers. The vintage feed bags are very colorful and sport quaint and nostalgic prints. I remember when I was a...

Grateful – The Vintage Hen – Friday, June 14, 2013

You might think, what with my love of old photographs and vintage that I wished that I lived in another time and place. I don’t. I don’t do politics on my blog, but I have to say that I’m so grateful to be here, in America, now. If I had given birth 100 years ago, I would have died. If it weren’t for science, I’d be deaf. My gay family members and friends can now marry (at least here, in my state.) My grandparents escaped the pogroms in Russia. For my family, this is the best it has ever been....

Horses and Trust – The Vintage Hen – Friday, December 13, 2013

...way of training, but the fact is that good horsemen have developed trust using gentle methods for the thousands of years that we’ve worked alongside these animals. Not all horseman are kind. Many are harsh. Many don’t know any other way than to subjugate the horse into behaving. But, even in the past the old plow horse was often treated as a member of the farm family. In my library of vintage farm ephemera I have a treatise published in 1898 on how to train with kindness. Photographs in my collection also tell this story. A small boy of four...

Chickens in Orchards – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, July 31, 2012

It’s peach season. I have one tree. This year’s crop was not only sparse, but also wormy. After cutting away the bad parts (and feeding to the chickens) I had only 2 small bowls of peaches for breakfast. This afternoon I’m going to a farmers market to buy peaches, as the season is fleeting and I need some for eating, and a bushel to freeze for pies this winter. Starting this fall, I’m going to try a new method of peach borer worm control. Chickens. A few of my vintage poultry books detail how to integrate a flock into a...

Repurposed – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, February 24, 2015

picassospaintings I WANT THAT!!! The vintage cooler is fantastic. If I had one I'd use it for a million different things. Where do you find all your vintage egg baskets? Marie I remember the milkman...he would come right into the house and put deliveries in the fridge. Terry Golson Flea markets and eBay. Marilyn No box for us. We put our empty bottles on the front porch (one of my chores) and our milkman replaced them with the full ones. On those very cold days in Kentucky the cream would rise to the top and pot the paper lid. That...

Snowbound Chores – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, February 10, 2015

We’re not exaggerating. This is record-breaking snowfall – more than has been recorded in the last 150 years. I’m feeling housebound. And so I tidy. Yesterday, I cleaned the pantry. I organized my flours (I have more than six types that I bake with, including my favorite for pizza, Auto Amazon Links: No products found. http_request_failed: A valid URL was not provided. I’ve been meaning to put labels on the canisters. Yesterday I finally got around to that task. There. Now I feel better.   I’m also sorting through my collection of vintage chicken things....

A Group Portrait – The Vintage Hen – Monday, January 6, 2014

What with the sad news posts I’ve been writing, I thought that we could all use a charming vintage photo to puzzle over. What’s going on here? UPDATE: the caption on the back reads: All of my family except for the chickens. Taken in our back yard about a week ago. Weston, Texas, Feb. 1930 Have you tried to photograph all of your animals, at one time? Can you imagine the rumpus if I tried to do that here? Just the thought of it makes me smile. (By the way, take a look at that terrier. Her legs are in...

Vintage Apron #10 – The Vintage Hen – Sunday, November 24, 2013

...them all each day! Happy Thanksgiving! Joan Gage I have a vintage apron--with chickens--that you will love. I will mail it to you if you will write me at joanpgage@yahoo.com and tell me your address. Joan Gage Cassie Calvetti This one is so girly, I also like the colors. Thank you for sharing! How is Miss Buffy doing? Elizabeth Anne (TX) Watch out! Someone may approach you to become an apron model. Your trim figure, stance and pose are perfect. I feel that with you modeling aprons, they will make a comeback! Love this one. Terry Golson If "apron model"...

Handmade Pottery Chicken Feeder – The Vintage Hen – Monday, December 23, 2013

LIly was quite excited when the delivery man left a big box on the front porch. I was, too, because I knew what was inside. One of my readers is a potter. She also has chickens. Of course, if you have a flock of hens, you are always thinking of how to make the coop area more charming. If you’re a potter, and one as talented as LIndsay, then you can act on your whims. Lindsay has come up with a line of chicken feeders and waterers of her own design. To me, they are reminiscent of the vintage ceramic...

Humpty Dumpty Valentine – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I do like Humpty Dumpty. Despite the tragic ending, there’s something so optimistic and sweet about that egg sitting on a wall. And to think that he’s important enough that the King’s men (all of them!) try to fix him! Here’s a vintage Humpty Dumpty Valentine to make you smile.     that folds out to reveal a little boy (and some fun wordplay.)...

Chickens & Children – The Vintage Hen – Monday, April 15, 2013

Children have a natural affinity for chickens, and visa versa. This is nothing new, as seen in this hundred year-old photograph. This is one of my favorite images in my collection. It didn’t make it into my book, Vintage Chicken Photographs: 30 Postcards because of its proportions, so I’m sharing it here....

Optimism – The Vintage Hen – Monday, January 21, 2013

I do love old egg baskets. So, when I stopped at an antique coop on Saturday, and spied a wire basket that I didn’t yet have in my collection, I couldn’t resist. I have one of this style, but not of this size! The vintage basket that I use daily is on the right. The new, super-sized basket is on the left. I Of all of my baskets, I think that this style is the most practical. The little feet on the bottom keep the eggs from smashing if I set the basket down too quickly (as I have done,...

Poultry Show Common Sense – The Vintage Hen – Monday, January 13, 2014

...look at, a huge raffle to enter, and booths to peruse. I’ll be there! Look for me to the side of the hall, where I’ll have copies of my books for sale. Special for the Poultry Congress, I’ll have my books of vintage photographs on sale for Half Off at $10 each. (Saturday only, and only at the show.) I’m going to bring a couple of extra chairs so that you can stop by and chat for awhile. Let me know if you’re coming. I hope to see you there! If you are coming to this, or any poultry show,...

A Scruffy Dog – The Vintage Hen – Friday, January 31, 2014

I’ve noticed, in my collection of vintage photographs, that animals, even doted on lap dogs, are left scruffy. Unkempt even. These weren’t animals as fashion accessories, but rather companions that were expected to do the things that animals do. I’m hopeful that after the photo shoot, that this little girl got out of her pristine white outfit, put on her woolen leggings and worn jumper, and went on adventures with her dog. She certainly looks like she’s done with that bow and romper, doesn’t she?...

A Man And His Cat – The Vintage Hen – Monday, February 17, 2014

...made me sick every time I visited home. Much denial! So, that is why I don’t keep cats and regale you with cat stories and fill my blogs with cute kitten pictures. Vintage photographs will have to suffice. This portrait dates from around 1910. I can imagine this young man walking down the street to the photography studio, black cat in his arms. The photographer’s backdrop has seen better days. The man’s suit is ill-fitting. But, none of that matters because the sweet countenances of both cat and man shine through. I wonder who he had this photograph taken for?...

Vintage Photos of People and their Chickens – The Vintage Hen – Sunday, May 27, 2012

A hundred years ago, when agriculture was diverse and smaller scale, poultry was an essential and integral part of almost every farm. Chickens were found not only in the country, but also in village henneries and on city lots. Chickens were usually women’s work, and since the hens often ranged right outside the back porch, they were a part of daily life. Women cared for the flocks, children played with the chickens, and egg money kept families afloat during hard times. I’ve been collecting photographs, diaries and books from this era, and will share it with you here. "I think...

Vintage Chicken Costume – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, October 29, 2013

I think this is a chicken costume. Then again, there’s no comb on her head. Still, I think she’s a chicken. A chicken wearing ballet shoes. What role could she be dancing? This snapshot has no history attached to it. So, we’ll just have to imagine. Thoughts?...

Vintage Apron #4 – The Vintage Hen – Friday, November 15, 2013

Here is a practical, wipe your floury hands on the cotton sort of apron.     It’s got the classic mid-century color combo of drab green, turquoise and salmon. I doubt that the fabric designer had ever seen a real chicken (what’s with those three lines coming out of the roosters’ rears?), although somehow, the energy of a flock of chickens was perfectly conveyed.     I love how the fabric depicts a peaceful evening in the barns. Nary a mischievous goat, nor pecking hen, nor farmer in sight. Calming and yet cheerful, isn’t it?   (For those paying attention:...

Vintage Apron # 2 – The Vintage Hen – Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Back in the heyday of aprons, you could buy novelty fabric made for the purpose, and quickly sew up a cute one. My sewing skills consist entirely of being able to stitch a straight line with my simple machine, but even I’d be tempted with this material. Everyone is kicking up their heels!   The pigs are having a party.   The cows are having their morning kaffeeklatsch.   Only the farmer looks harried.   I can relate to that....
