A Beautiful Winter – HenBlog – Thursday, February 19, 2015

...shoveling) to do. But the mail is still delivered!   On a walk yesterday with Lily I saw one of my favorite harbingers of spring. Pussy Willow. It’s not usually framed against such a pure white backdrop.   Looking up in that tree, there was this abandoned bird’s nest. I’ve never seen one with a cap of snow like that.   Lily and I think that Old Man Winter has been putting on quite a show. When the sun is shining and the temperature is in the 20s, it’s downright enjoyable.     However, not everyone has the same perspective....

AmyR Beautiful pictures and entertaining narrative, as always, Terry! I wanted to send fond wishes for a successful surgery on Friday. I know you have to be excited and apprehensive all at once. But your many fans are right behind you, cheering you on - and soon you'll be able to hear us! It's been bitter cold here in Savannah - Several nights in the 20s is...

A Respite Between the Storms – HenBlog – Thursday, January 20, 2011

...like a deer. The snow was almost worth that comical moment. David & Wendy Scott Absolutely gorgeous. We live our winters through your webcam since Seattle rarely gets much snow, only temperatures in the 20s but dry. But we’re lucky that we have Paradise Mt. Rainier just a couple hours away and we get to experience nature frequently on snowshoes with over 100 inches of snow. LB How are you doing now with your hearing? Magic Cochin Oh my goodness - more snow. It looks beautiful though. We've forgotten about snow and ice, looking for all the lovely buds and...

Blankets For Horses – The Vintage Hen – Saturday, January 4, 2014

...good, but it's actually detrimental the flock's health. Horses with thick coats can sweat with blankets on, and that is bad for their health. Blankets can chafe, and limit mobility. Tonka is getting the worst case of dandruff! And when I take it off to groom him, he gets static electricity shocks (poor guy!) Tonka isn't clipped, and his fur coat has grown in, so, if it's not raining or snowing, and if the temp get up in the 20s, he goes au natural. Tracy Terry, forgive me if you already know this tip. One way to eliminate (or minimize)...

Weather To Worry About – HenBlog – Monday, January 6, 2014

...be especially detrimental below freezing. Dry, well-ventilated, no drafts, with a heater pad for water, and big windows, and the hens are fine with outside temps dipping into the minus teens F. I don't have experience with temps in the minus 20s, but I've heard from folks that do. Insulation and just enough heat to take the edge off is all you need. Terry Golson One more thing - windchill shouldn't affect the hens in the coop as long as the coop is draft-free. You've got several issues in your coop - no glass windows, and I expect little air...

6 Eggs! – HenBlog – Tuesday, February 11, 2014

...might enjoy knowing you and your menagerie have a devoted hem cam fan in NE Wisconsin. :) We have had the coldest winter in something like 20 years with piles and piles of snow, too. This week's forecast is looking good though with a break in the mid-20's from Wed. on. HOPEFULLY. I'm on my third flock with a young group of 8 mixed breeds that I acquired in early October. I have learned so much from you and thank you for that. Your practical and sensible approach to chicken-keeping has been great. I am sad that I haven't been...
