My Vintage Apron Collection – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, November 12, 2013

...too? Waiting to see others..... Terry Golson I don't cook in those boots, but I do greet guests in them :) Bea Gibson I just love the hen pocket and chicks! I'll be borrowing that idea for an apron if you don't mind. Of course the aprons I make have tops because that's the part I always find gets the worse of the flour. I always wear an apron and also have a vintage collection that I wear and have some hanging in the kitchen. It just gives that homey look. I do have an apron shaped like a chick...

Vintage Apron #8 – The Vintage Hen – Thursday, November 21, 2013

This color scheme is similar to Vintage Apron # 4: mid-century pink, turquoise, grey and black.     But even with those roosters (on small, starred balls, what’s with that?) the scalloped pink trim makes this number somehow flirty and feminine.   I have twenty pies to bake in the next two weeks for my Pie Party. I’ve already rolled out and frozen 16 pie crusts, but since some of the pies have top and bottom crusts, I still need to make 4 more, and a few graham cracker crusts, too. Time to tie on the apron and get to...

Vintage Apron #5 – The Vintage Hen – Monday, November 18, 2013

The best homemade vintage apron has fluffy hens,   useful pockets,   and a vain rooster right in the center....

Vintage Apron #10 – The Vintage Hen – Sunday, November 24, 2013

...them all each day! Happy Thanksgiving! Joan Gage I have a vintage apron--with chickens--that you will love. I will mail it to you if you will write me at joanpgage@yahoo.com and tell me your address. Joan Gage Cassie Calvetti This one is so girly, I also like the colors. Thank you for sharing! How is Miss Buffy doing? Elizabeth Anne (TX) Watch out! Someone may approach you to become an apron model. Your trim figure, stance and pose are perfect. I feel that with you modeling aprons, they will make a comeback! Love this one. Terry Golson If "apron model"...

Vintage Apron #6 – The Vintage Hen – Tuesday, November 19, 2013

It’s the details on this apron that make me happy. Are these vegetables beets? No matter what they are, I can imagine them singing and dancing in the kitchen.   I want to plant this heart tree in my backyard.   And I’d invite this industrious and cheerful mid-century hen to join my flock!   Those are my favorite details on this apron, but there are more. Does wearing such an apron put happiness into one’s cooking? I like to think so....

Vintage Apron #4 – The Vintage Hen – Friday, November 15, 2013

...Cox used to have a substantial collection of Hawaiian shirts and wore a different one for his nightly forcasts all summer long. He used to rate the weather using H shirts on a chart....more shirts equaled better weather. His fans would send him new shirts and some of them were flashier then others(shall we say)..... He did this for years and it became his trademark. Just think...you could become the apron lady of chicken bloggers. :) Rebecca You are definitely stylin girl! Nice collection...no excellent collection!! Michele b Also a cute apron. So far I like apron 1 the mst....

Vintage Apron #7 – The Vintage Hen – Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Bea Gibson Another cute apron! But I just have to say this, for a lady your age, you sure have a nice shape! I really noticed it in these aprons and when you were sitting on your horse. You look like a 35 year old especially with that huge smile you have .... the new Mom smile! Pat D. The only thing that would make it more chaotic would be to add some guineas out there with all those roosters! Ha! Jean R Love the duck tugging at the chicken lady's hem. Makes me wonder if the eggs in her...

Vintage Apron # 2 – The Vintage Hen – Wednesday, November 13, 2013

...also as well Ken. I love the old towels, linens etc. Rebecca Me too love the boots. Boots always make the outfit......especially cowgirl boots!!! Terry Golson Especially once-in-a-lifetime Old Gringo boots in red. Suzanne Hear, hear! Awesome boots, Terry! And that apron is too much of a find. That's what I'd call an Atomic Age Apron! (I have an embarrassingly "disco" apron: it's terrycloth, probably synthetic, with the zodiac printed on it...) Suzanne Apron detail: I dig those lost-looking turkeys! :^) Jonathan That apron is pretty cool... You got those boots in Texas rite? Terry Golson Austin. Of course :)...

Vintage Apron #9 – The Vintage Hen – Friday, November 22, 2013

This apron combines flirty gauze with practical cotton, in a pattern that’s all about chickens and working farms.     What I love the most about it, is that although there’s a crowing rooster, it’s the hens that take center stage.   Those hens look like they have a story to tell. I wonder what it is?...

Vintage Cocktail Apron – The Vintage Hen – Thursday, November 14, 2013

Here is Apron # 3 from my collection.   There was a time when a housewife was advised to greet her husband at the door in her best dress, with a cocktail in one hand, and a flirty, gauzy apron around her waist.   The chickens on my apron look like they’ve been drinking those martinis! I’m more likely to greet Steve in my barn clothes, with a mug of hot cider, which suits both of us. Tomorrow’s apron fits in with that farmgirl life....

Fox! – HenBlog – Sunday, December 13, 2009

...for that old lady. Lily listens for UPS trucks. She can hear the trucks – through the closed door – a quarter of a mile away. I do not exaggerate. Lily barks. A lot. When it is too much for me, I send her under my desk with a “quiet!” command. She doesn’t like being taken away from her work, but she goes. On Saturday, I was sitting at my computer (I confess to not working – I was bidding on a vintage apron embroidered with chickens.) Lily barked. It was not a vizla bark, or a basset hound bark,...

Exercise For Laying Hens – The Vintage Hen – Monday, September 24, 2012

...birds that ate only their product, and a lot of it. But, no! The cover showed busy chickens outside on grass. (As an aside, I so want that apron!) Even inside the barn Wirthmore advised a system that encouraged the hens to scratch and mill about. So, before you toss handfuls of mealworms and cracked corn to your girls, remember the advice from the Wirthmore Feeds company. What your hens need are exercise, healthy foods and fresh air. Sounds like words of wisdom that I should follow, too. PS For a useful vintage egg record chart see this post.  ...

We Made Pies – HenBlog – Sunday, October 27, 2013

On Saturday, five women spent the the afternoon in my kitchen to learn how to master pie crust. All of the ingredients and tools were ready for their arrival.   We made tea, talked about our favorite pies, and got to work. A lot of flour flew, as can be seen on my shirt (I should have worn a full apron, but couldn’t resist wearing this cute vintage one.)   I taught them how to make dough in the food processor. Handled correctly, with the right proportions of fat and water to flour, this machine can turn out the perfect...

Farm Cats Vintage Photo – The Vintage Hen – Sunday, August 24, 2014

This photo, circa 1900, shows some classic farm cats. The young woman has an apron on over her everyday work dress – it’s just the place for a kitten to be. These cats are likely being fed milk. If they’re lucky, there might be meat scraps, too. Those cats had a job to do. Not only did they keep rats out of the barns, but they also kept the family’s food safe from vermin. Cooked food and baked goods were stored in a pantry. They didn’t have seal-tight plastic containers and refrigerators. (Remember the scene in Anne of Green Gables...

My Thanksgiving Tradition – HenBlog – Monday, November 30, 2009

...yesterday (and various smaller children that I don’t count.) I served 19 pies. There were no leftovers. (notice my vintage chicken apron!) This is what I baked: Lemon Pie with Pecans, Chocolate Chip Tollhouse Pie, Mint Chip Tollhouse Pie, Cranberry-Pear Tart in a Hazelnut Shortbread Crust, Apple Pie with a Ginger Streusel Topping, Chocolate Pudding Pie with a Creme Fraiche Whipped Topping, Blueberry-Cranberry Pie, Mango Chiffon Pie with a Toasted Coconut Crust, Apricot Cheesecake Tart in a Cream Cheese Crust, and Chocolate and Pine Nut Tart. There were also savory pies – Ricotta Tart with Saffron and Sage, Feta and...
